The literature of ancient India consists of myths, legends, hymns to the gods, epics, philosophical treatises, parables and fairy tales in various languages – Vedic, Sanskrit, Tamil. It also unites different beliefs – Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
Modern Indian literature is written in North Indian languages and dates back to about 1200 AD. The themes and trends of Indian literature from this period are based on Hindu religious texts, although the texts were often diluted with secular subjects.
